Learning a New Creative Skill Can Feel Overwhelming…

Learning a New Skill Can Feel Daunting…

Especially if you don’t know where to begin!

In this course, I’ll teach you how to make comics and zines from a youth perspective, with practical demos, templates, and techniques you can actually use. If you’ve got stories in your sketchbook and you want to publish them your way, you’re in the right place.

The goal of this course is to help you go from having ideas in your head or sketches in your notebook to creating finished comics and zines you can actually hold, share, or keep for yourself. You’ll learn how to pull story moments from real life without losing your voice or oversharing, and how to shape those moments into short, readable comics with clear goals, conflict, pacing, and endings.

Along the way, you’ll build an autobiographical character design that feels like you but stays consistent from panel to panel, using simple stylization choices, expressions, and beginner-friendly turnarounds.

You’ll also learn the practical side of DIY publishing, paneling, composition, lettering basics, and zine formats like folding and assembling. This way, you can finish pages faster, develop a repeatable workflow, and leave the course with more confidence, stronger storytelling skills, and a process you can use for any future zine or comic project.

Zine-Making Is Fun And Freeing When You Know How

That’s the strength of this course: a clear, structured process that takes you from scattered ideas to finished pages, helping you create confident characters, intentional layouts, and zines with purpose.

I created Zero to Zine: The Radical Guide to Character Sketching, Layout & Art Sales to help you push past hesitation, perfectionism, and self-doubt while gaining the skills to sketch characters, design compelling layouts, and actually finish a zine. You’ll be guided step by step by someone with experience creating, self-publishing, and sharing art.

Once you understand the foundations of character sketching, visual storytelling, and layout, you’ll develop a process and aesthetic that feel truly your own—no rules, no gatekeeping,
no waiting to be “ready.”

By the end of the course, you’ll have the mindset, tools, and confidence to create expressive characters, dynamic layouts, and a complete zine—and to put your work into the world on your own terms.

Hi! I'm Mackenzie

Hi, I’m Mackenzie, and I am a published book illustrator, graphic designer, and lifelong zine maker. I’ve been creating and distributing zines since I was 9 years old, and I’ve grown up in the zine world, attending events like Paper Plains and KC Zine Con, trading work, learning from other artists, and building my own style through years of DIY publishing.

Along the way, I’ve balanced creative projects in real life: working with people in my community to help promote events, design dedication pieces, and turn ideas into artwork that connects with others. I also take on a steady stream of commissions, which has taught me how to create consistently and keep my process realistic.

People usually hesitate for a few super normal reasons, and the course is built to cover them

A big fear is “I’m not good enough to take a comics course.” This course is beginner-friendly by design: you’ll work with simple shapes, repeatable steps, and follow-along demos where messy drafts are expected. The focus is consistency and finishing, not perfect anatomy or “pro-level” drawing.

Another fear is “I’ll start and not finish.” That’s why lessons are short, structured, and project-based. Every module ends with something tangible: thumbnails, a character sheet, a one-page arc, a mini-zine, so you keep collecting wins instead of getting stuck in theory.

A lot of people worry, “I don’t have time or the right supplies.” This course uses basic materials (paper, pencil, pen) and teaches DIY formats that don’t require special equipment. You can do it in small pockets of time, and you’ll learn a workflow that’s fast enough to repeat.

Some people also worry, “I won’t like my style” or “my character changes every panel.” That’s why we build stylization rules, expression sets, and simple turnarounds, so your “you” character stays recognizable and easy to redraw, even if your style evolves. And finally, there’s the fear of “what if I don’t fit in?” The tone is casual and creator-friendly, especially for young and alternative artists.

It’s not gatekeep-y, it’s not lecture-y—it’s a supportive, make-stuff-now environment where your voice and perspective are the whole point.
